Profit in Focus: The Importance of Numbers while Freelancing

Updated: Sep 13, 2025

Embarking on freelance content creation in 2021, I lacked the marketing knowledge related to numbers that would best position me to experience profit. The sales funnel would’ve been valuable information to calculate various numbers to gain insight on what needs to occur. Here’s how I could’ve applied it. All of my purchased equipment initially totaled $3,000, and my monthly subscriptions toward other assets totaled $339/month for the first half of the year.

During the first half of 2021, I spent $5,034 collectively to operate as a content creator. We could simplify it and realize I’d need to make $839 per month for those 6 months to break even. Let’s take if further. Of the 30 people I would reach out to for work per month, around 75% (22.5) would read the message. Of the 75% that would read the message, around 65% would reply (14.625). Of those who replied, 30% (4.38) would sign contracts to receive content creation during that month. Taking that $839 we discovered, let’s divide that by the 30% (4.38) who replied. Within this context, I’d need to charge a minimum of $191.553 per client per project for those 6 months in order to break even. Possession of this concept at that time would’ve been pivotal in how I price my services, as well as prevented me from experiencing financial loss.
